Summative Assignment – UK
In this section, the Assessment Toolkit analyzes
summative assessments and formative assessments as part of the assessment cycle at
the course level. Looking at assessment through this lens
allows for a more seamless connection between summative assessments as well as
formal assessment (formal as well as informal) at the course level. Students
also benefit from a unidirectional connection between their assessment and
learning.
Assessment can be formative, diagnostic or summative. All
assessments may contain at least one aspect of each (see the Glossary and
Additional Information).
The responsibilities and roles of the responsibility of
Department, Programme and Module leaders, Schools and Students with regard to
the Feedback and Assessment Policy are summarized in the document.
Assessment principles to achieve the above objectives
Assessment will be conducted according to the following principles and will:
* Is based on learning outcomes as well as evaluation
criteria
* Integral to programmed design
* Fair and free of bias
* Valid, honest, trustworthy and transparent
* Time-bound and incremental
* Consistent
* Challenging but easily manageable and effective.
Each module should include both summative and formative
assessments. Formative assessments must be designed to reflect the type of
summative assessments that students will encounter in the course and are timed
to ensure that students get feedback on their assessment in sufficient time so
that they can use the feedback to enhance their ability to complete the summative
task. Formative assessments at an early point in the course could indicate
whether students are engaged and allow the identification of students who need
additional help. Because of the importance of early feedback for student's
success, it's essential to remind students that assessment via formative
assessments is an important indicator of their engagement in the course.
