This course introduces students to the basic methods of empirical inquiry into Accounting, Finance, and management. The course will give students a solid grounding in statistical inference and enable them to produce basic statistical research with confidence. The skills learned will also enable the student to become a more sophisticated user of advanced research methods. The course is designed to help students understand the limitations and advantages of quantitative techniques.

Module Learning Outcomes

* Know the technical details of quantitative techniques

* Understand and select the different quantitative methods used to analyze different data types

* Interpret the output of computer programs for data analysis.

Module Content

Topic 1: Measurements and Charts

* Types (nominal, ordinal discrete and continuous data)

* Central tendency

* Measures for spread (standard deviation, variance, IQR range, coefficient of variability)

Data can be presented in a variety of ways, including graphically and as tabular data.

Topic 2: Price Indices

Price changes relative to each other

* Inflation

* Simple and aggregate

* Correction for inflation
